The Buddha did not teach in Sanskrit. Gautama Buddha taught in Prakrit or Magadhi Prakrit language. Prakrit is a middle Indo-Aryan language. It was spoken in India between the 3rd century BC and the 8th century AD. It's close to Pali, in which the Pali Canon was written down a few centuries later.
